La vegetariana tells the story of a woman, Yeonghye, who turns an ordinary life into a disturbing nightmare by making a simple decision: to stop eating meat. Told through three different voices, the novel explores her gradual detachment from human existence as she chooses to stop being what others expect her to be.

Like another member of the family, the reader bears witness —stunned— to this subversive act, which will shatter her family life and transform all her relationships into a vortex of violence, shame, and desire.
