BIOGRAPHY
Francis DK Ching (Honolulu, 1943) qualified as an architect in 1966 from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and, after several years in professional practice, began teaching at Ohio University in 1972. He is currently Professor Emeritus at the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington (Seattle)
At the start of his teaching career, Ching created 400 pages of illustrated class notes in preparation for his architectural drawing courses. These notes formed the basis for the publication in 1974 of Architectural Graphics (Spanish edition Manual de dibujo arquitectónico, 1976, 2013), the first of many books that have made him internationally renowned as a master of architectural drawing. Since then, Ching has published numerous key works, including A Visual Dictionary of Architecture (1997, 2015), Design Drawing (1999, with S. P. Juroszek), Architecture: Form, Space, and Order (2007, 2015), Interior Design Illustrated (2011, 2015, with C. Binggeli), A Global History of Architecture (2011, with M. M. Jarzombek and V. Prakash), and Building Structures Illustrated (2014, with B. S. Onouye and D. Shapiro; 2015, with Ian M. Shapiro)—all published by Editorial Gustavo Gili.
Ian M. Shapiro (Johannesburg, 1956), trained in mechanical engineering, is a consultant in sustainability and energy efficiency. He has been a visiting lecturer at Cornell University, Tompkins-Cortland Community College, and Syracuse University. He has worked on numerous projects designed in accordance with the LEED standard and has led a wide range of energy research initiatives. He is a regular contributor to the ASHRAE Journal and Home Energy magazine

The book takes the reader on a journey from the outside inwards: beginning with the site and its surroundings, continuing through the building envelope, and concluding with an analysis of environmental aspects such as lighting, heating, and climate control systems. Along the way, it explores a range of cross-cutting themes, including water conservation, materials, indoor environmental quality, and the use of renewable energy. The whole provides a thorough and methodical exploration of green architecture, presenting key topics, a basic theoretical framework, and concrete strategies for designing within the paradigm of sustainability.
The illustrations detailing these principles and discussions —created by master draughtsman Francis DK Ching— form a superb visual guide to the design and construction of sustainable buildings, making this book a unique and essential manual in the field of sustainable architecture and construction.
Now a recognised reference work, this guide is a vital tool for professionals and students alike, as well as anyone interested in the sustainable design and construction of buildings.
