FAQ ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY

What is the Circular Economy?

The Circular Economy is a closed-loop model of production and consumption that aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible, while minimising waste generation. It involves sharing, renting, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as many times as possible, thereby creating added value. In doing so, we extend their life cycle.

This economic model, which aims to minimise waste, emissions and pollution, stands in contrast to the traditional linear model, largely based on the «take-make-waste» concept that relies heavily on the use of cheap, readily available materials and energy. Planned obsolescence is also a feature of the linear model.

The transition towards a Circular Economy model is key to achieving sustainable development. In this context, the UN Sustainable Development Goals play a crucial role by offering a strong framework to support this transformation.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (hereafter SDGs) are a roadmap with 17 goals set by the United Nations that humanity must address by 2030. They are global in scope and inclusive in nature, meaning they apply to all countries and all individuals, regardless of their level of development. The goals cover issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and decent work, among others. They are action-oriented since they aim to transform the world.

Achieving the SDGs involves governments, but it also calls on organisations, businesses, and individual citizens to take shared responsibility. At MUNDANA, as a business, we are committed to Conscious Consumption as a means of contributing to the achievement of the SDGs—particularly Goal 12: ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns to safeguard the wellbeing of present and future generations.

What is Conscious Consumption?

The Conscious Consumption is a way of consuming goods or services based on informed and responsible decision-making, considering the social, environmental, and health impacts of that consumption. It stands in contrast to the still-prevalent model of choosing based on the lowest price, which often leads to the accumulation of goods that are not truly necessary.

How can we embrace Conscious Consumption?

There are countless approaches to Conscious Consumption, but we can start following three key principles:

  • Consume less, by reconsidering our needs, using only the necessary resources, and caring for and repairing our belongings
  • Consume without buying, by making use of public goods, borrowing or renting, exchanging our belongings, and upcycling waste materials
  • Practice sustainable shopping, by choosing second-hand and reusable items, supporting people-focused initiatives (such as fair trade or social enterprise), favouring the local economy, and selecting products with a low environmental impact

What does sustainable shopping mean?

If we choose to consume by purchasing, and we want to minimise the impact of our consumption on the planet and society, we can follow the steps below, in the order listed:

  • Reflect on the need to be met: Conscious Consumption does not require giving anything up, but rather encourages prior reflection
  • Explore the options available to us. The more we know, the better our chances of finding one that aligns with our values and circumstances
  • Make decisions with social, environmental, and health responsibility in mind

How can MUNDANA help us to embrace Conscious Consumption?

Reflecting on our needs and making final purchasing decisions are entirely the Customer’s responsibility. However, access to reliable information about the goods available is the key factor in making a sustainable purchase.

At MUNDANA, we collect comprehensive information about the values of the products we offer, categorising it into five areas: Concept, Composition, Production, Care, and End-of-Life Management. Immediate access to this information will help us choose the option that best meets our needs, while bringing social, environmental, and personal health benefits.

How can we access information about the goods we're interested in?

At MUNDANA, we provide information about the values of the products we sell through various communication channels:

  • Labels on the clothing and accessories displayed in our Showroom
  • Signs highlighting key product values on our displays
  • Product profiles on our Web Site
  • Customer Service staff, who will be pleased to address any questions you have

What are the benefits of Conscious Consumption?

Conscious Consumption brings benefits both on an individual and a societal level.

Individually:

  • It helps us save money, by reducing expenses and limiting the accumulation of goods
  • It benefits our health, through the consumption of higher-quality products and reduced stress
  • It increases satisfaction, by raising awareness of environmental and social issues

Socially:

  • It protects the environment, by reducing pollution and waste of natural resources
  • It promotes equity, by supporting global access to quality products and services
  • It contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals at a local level by meeting the needs of the present generations without compromising those of future ones
